Montenegro, pearl of the middle Mediterranean, situated in South Europe, is one of the youngest European countries. Small in size at 13 812 km, it is a coastal and mountainous country at the same time. Although it looks small, it hides a treasure of untouched nature which might be explored with little effort. CONTINENTAL PART This beautiful country is adorned by mountains reflecting Montenegro’s rich history and culture. One mountain is Lovćen, with Njegoš’s mausoleum on its top. Njegoš was a great writer and ruler of Montenegro in the 19th century. Another mountain, Durmitor, has a massif of twenty two peaks over 2,200 m high and nineteen mountain lakes. Some lakes are higher than 2,000 m. A mountainous town called Žabljak, with ski lifts and paths on Savin kuk mountain, is the centre of winter tourism in Montenegro. Long ago Orjen, a beautiful mountain near Boka bay, was the source of snow during summer, which was sold to café bar owners and served instead of ice. Orjen is famous for its indigenous plants and tracks for recreation and hiking. It represents a real heaven for speleologists and trekking-lovers. The river Tara is the longest mountain river in Montenegro. It’s canyon is 80 km long and reaches a depth of 1,300 m. In 1980 part of Tara river canyon and national park were registered by UNESCO as a world natural heritage site. Tara river canyon is the second deepest and longest in the world, after Colorado canyon in the USA. Tara river rafting offers unforgettable adventure in pristine nature for challenge-lovers. The jewel of Montenegro is the national park “Skadarsko jezero” of 40 thousand hectares with the largest lake in the Balkans, as well as a great number of islands and peninsulas containing ruins from a stormy history. It has a wealth of flora and fauna with over 40 species of fish and over 270 species of birds.
COASTAL PART Part of the Montenegrin coast has the cleanest water in the Mediterranean. The 293.5 km long coast has many bays and astonishing blue water. The Mediterranean climate is moderate with dry, warm summers and mild winters. The southernmost town on the Montenegrin coast is Ulcinj and if you like bathing in the bathing suits of Adam and Eve then the nude beach of Ulcinj is right for you. The town of Bar boasts an olive tree more than two thousand years old. The region has traditionally cultivated olives and produced olive oil. Maritime pursuits and the olive industry represent the dominant symbols of the town. Budva, today a tourism metropolis, has theatres and summer events. It is known for Petrovac and St. Stefan, the world famous hotel, and is rich in sandy beaches and interesting places for sightseeing. BOKA BAY Boka bay is the largest bay of the Mediterranean Sea. Its unique fjordlike shape consists of four smaller bays (Kotorski, Risanski, Tivatski and Hercegnovski). The bay holds seven islands: St. Marko, Mamula, Gospa od Skrpjela, St. Djordje, Milosrdja, Ostrvo cvijeća and Mala Gospa. Boka bay is known for its brave sailors, craftsmen, architects and many other famous people. The maritime industry, its foundation, has provided a great cultural heritage. The best preserved baroque town on the Mediterranean is Perast with palaces of famous maritime captains from this region. |
